Dry processed organophilic clay as anti-settling agent

Dry Process

Dry processed organophilic bentonite: Dry processing coats carefully selected bentonite particles with organic rheology modifiers through high-shear mechanical treatment, instead of the traditional wet reaction plus drying.

Because there is no water-based reaction and no drying step, dry processing offers several advantages:

  • Better storage stability – the product does not form hard lumps in the bag.
  • Lower processing cost – no energy-intensive drying section is required.
  • More consistent quality – less variation caused by different drying conditions.
  • Easier logistics – less risk during long-distance transportation.

Dry processed organophilic clay

Dry processed organophilic bentonite clay is a modified bentonite that is organophilic and lipophilic, so it can be well dispersed in non-polar and low-polarity base oils such as diesel, mineral oil and synthetic hydrocarbons. Inside the drilling fluid, its plate-like particles form a three-dimensional network structure under shear, building gel strength, controlling sagging and stabilizing the rheology of the mud.

  • Builds gel strength and yield point for better hole cleaning.
  • Controls barite sag and keeps weighting materials uniformly suspended.
  • Improves lubricity and reduces torque and drag in deviated and horizontal wells.
  • Maintains viscosity under high temperature and salt contamination.
  • Can be added directly to the oil phase under shear with no pre-gel.

Technical Data Sheet – dry processed organophilic bentonite

The following table of Dry processed organophilic bentonite shows typical properties of a dry processed organophilic bentonite used in oil-based drilling mud. Actual data can be tailored to your requirements.

Appearance Free-flowing light cream powder
Moisture ≤ 3.0%
Bulk density 0.4–0.6 g/cm³
Sieve residue (74 μm) ≤ 1.0%
Organic treatment Optimized for diesel / mineral oil systems
Base oil compatibility Diesel, mineral oil and selected synthetic base oils

Why must oilfield drilling use organic bentonite with matching polarity?

The polarity of the base oil and that of the organic bentonite must match each other. If the polarity is mismatched, several risks can appear in your drilling fluid system:

  • Thickening failure and sedimentation – the organoclay cannot be fully activated.
  • Unstable gel structure – the mud gel becomes weak and can lead to wellbore collapse.
  • Mud weight fluctuations – solids settle and effective density at the bit drops.

By choosing a dry processed organophilic bentonite designed specifically for diesel and mineral oil based mud, you ensure polarity matching and gain a stable gel structure, predictable rheology and reliable wellbore stability.

Applications

Dry processed ORGANOPHILIC CLAY is designed for oilfield drilling fluids and also works as a versatile rheology modifier in many non-aqueous systems.

Oilfield drilling fluids and completion fluids

In diesel and mineral oil based muds, dry processed Organoclay:

  • Builds suspension and anti-settling structure for weighting materials.
  • Provides thixotropy for better cuttings transport and hole cleaning.
  • Adds lubricity, reducing torque, drag and tool wear.
  • Maintains rheology in high-temperature and high-salinity wells.

Fracturing fluids and high-temperature applications

In certain fracturing formulations, dry processed ORGANOPHILIC CLAY helps:

  • Suspend and carry proppants such as quartz sand.
  • Improve high-temperature gel stability under shear.
  • Enhance compatibility with polymers and surfactants.
  • Reduce the risk of proppant settling and screen-out.

Industrial applications beyond oilfield

Beyond oilfield, dry processed Organoclay and ORGANOPHILIC CLAY grades are widely used as rheology modifiers in:

  • Solvent-based paints and coatings – improved sag resistance and anti-settling.
  • Grease lubricants – thickening for high-temperature, high-load greases.
  • Printing inks and adhesives – controlled flow and leveling in non-aqueous systems.
  • Sealants and construction chemicals – body and slump resistance in solvent-borne systems.

Our technical team can recommend the most suitable Organoclay or ORGANOPHILIC CLAY grade for your specific formulation.
